Mexico 1848-C CE escudo

This specimen was lot 1329 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,902.50. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"MEXICO. Republic. Escudo, 1848 C CE. Culiacan. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. An attractive coin with light evidence of circulation, a decent planchet with just one small flake missing from the upper obverse on the rim, and copper traces in the lettering. Only a few of this date and mint have been offered through the decades at public auctions. Choice Extremely Fine."

The Culiacan mint struck this type 1846-70 and this date is priced by the SCWC only 25% higher than a common Mexico City issue.
