Mexico 1848-Zs OM 8 reales

Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70888

This specimen was lot 70888 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $960. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1848-Zs OM. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS MS-62. A handsomely toned example of the type with blue, green and orange hues." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. An 1848/7 overdate obtains a slight premium. Assayer OM operated 1831-55, one of the longest tenures of the Republic. Zacatecas closed in 1905, together with Culiacan the last branch mints.
