Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70887

This specimen was lot 70887 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1847-Zs OM. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS AU-58. Despite limited signs of handling, the 8 Reales is very pleasing, with good brilliance and a soft goldenrod color throughout." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Assayer OM operated 1831-55, one of the longest tenures of the Republic. No varieties are noted in the SCWC for this date.
