Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72084

This specimen was lot 72084 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Escudo, 1847-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. NGC UNC Details - Scratched. Very rare date. Relatively light scratch to the right of the liberty cap. Excellent luster, with strong inscriptions and devices." Half escudos were struck at Guadalajara in 1825, 1829-31, 1834-38, 1847, 1850-52, 1859-61. No premium is awarded for this date in the SCWC but many Guadalajara issues are very rare.
