from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 21374
Mexico SB818-21374r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21374 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Escudo, 1847/38-DoRM/L. NGC AU-55. Curious and perplexing overdate/overassayer combination. Slabbed as 1847/38 (unlisted), the 7 does appear to be over an 8 but the rest is unclear. This crude re-engraving style is typical of Durango. The overdate is not listed in Krause, nor is an overassayer for any date ending in 7 or 8. Over[as]sayer not noted on slab insert. Weakly struck centers but with full peripheral detail. A lovely example worthy of extensive study by the specialist." This date is unlisted in the SCWC and could just as easily be an 1848/37.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .049 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 378.1, Fr-111.
