Mexico 1847/37-Do RM 8 escudos

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72174

This specimen was lot 72174 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1847/37-Do RM. Durango Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details Gold Shield. A great overdate issue, this type is actually quite SCARCE and, despite this example's noted cleaning, it nevertheless presents as a solid representative and offers a bold overdate." The Durango mint struck eight escudos 1832-70 and is one of the abundant mints tho less so than Culiacan or Guanajuato; many dates are common. The eagle is distinctive to Durango and can be found on all the silver and gold denominations. Assayer RM is listed for 1830-48 and all known 1847 specimens have the overdate.
