Mexico 1847Ga escudo rev Stacks 110-1329.jpg

This specimen was lot 1329 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $575. The catalog description[1] noted,

"MEXICO. Republic. Escudo, 1847 Ga JG. Guadalajara. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Light yellow-gold with shallow directional hairlines from a moderate cleaning in the past. The strike is better than average, and the surfaces are average with a few shallow scratches and handling marks. Richard A. Long notes the appearance of 3 examples over the last few generations, most recently in 1982. The left branch extends to just touch the serif of the R in REPUBLICA, and the left wing of the eagle shows doubling on the outer edge. An opportunity for the advanced specialist to acquire a date that is seldom offered or seen. Extremely Fine."

The Guadalajara mint struck this type 1825-60; the SCWC prices this date only 25% higher than a common Mexico City issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 379.2, Fr-101.
