This specimen was lot 1248 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,437.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1847 Go PM. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Perhaps lightly cleaned long ago. Light yellow-gold with clean surfaces that retain their eye appeal. A minor planchet flaw is found on the edge and a thin crack extends inward through the first A of MEXICANA and peters in that letter. The strike is decent but a bit weak on the eagle's breast. Extremely Fine." The Guanajuato mint struck eight escudos 1828-70 and is one of the abundant mints for that denomination; most dates are common.
