Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72290

This specimen was lot 72290 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,950. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1848-Do RL. Durango Mint. NGC AU Details--Obverse Damage. Discovery coin, unique at this time. This coin is the result of "L", which was punched in the die by the hub, not being overpunched by an "M" as usual. This was probably noted and quickly corrected which would explain the great rarity of this coin. Close examination shows [the] other date on the original hub, 1831, has been overpunched. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." While the 1848-D^O RM is fairly common, assayer RL is not listed for this denomination. Assayer RL is recorded for this mint for the years 1825-29. As the auctioneers state, this anomaly is likely the result of engravers failing to punch an "M" over the "L" on the hub. Overdates 1848/31, 1848/33 and 1848/5 are noted, all for assayer RM (Ramon Mascarenas). The eagle shown is distinctive to the Durango mint and is believed to have originated in Paris.
