Mexico 1848-GC MP escudo

Heritage sale 3010, lot 22973

This specimen was lot 22973 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $276. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold Escudo 1848 Gc-MP, AU. Significant planchet crack and some corrosion noted. Scarce Guadalupe y Calvo, (GC), mint and quite lustrous." This specimen was struck at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint 1844-51; the SCWC prices this date only 75% higher than a common Mexico City issue but it is very scarce. Long^[2] noted in his census only half as many one escudos from this mint as half escudos.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.
