Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70315

This specimen was lot 70315 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $630. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1848-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC AU-58. Nicely preserved with bold devices and lustrous surfaces with light gray tone. The obverse exhibits interesting concentric cracks adding a bit of character to this handsome example. Gently circulated, this SCARCE date issue is pleasing to the eye with even wear on the high points and exposed areas." The Chihuahua mint began casting eight reales in 1810 in the opening part of the War of Independence. Machinery was obtained and portrait eight reales were produced 1814-22. The first cap and ray eight reales was issued in 1831. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1842. The 1848 is somewhat scarce. Most Chihuahua minors prior to the 1870's are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.
