Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70807

This specimen was lot 70807 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1848-Pi AM. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU-58. Perhaps technically Mint State, this example, while showing some strike softness in the centers. displaying full luster in the fields with a charming layer of tone over both sides. Seldom seen in this quality with Resplandores mentioning that, "An Uncirculated coin would be a great find." Only four examples are in the NGC census." The reported 1848/7 overdate is given a slight premium over the regular date in the SCWC. Assayer Am is listed for 1843-49.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.
