SB523-70521r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70521 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1848-GC MP. Guadalupe y Calvo Mint. PCGS Genuine--Surfaces Smoothed, EF Details. A bright example from this SCARCE mint, displaying a pleasing warm tone and strong details. While the surfaces have lost their original finish due to the noted smoothing, this little coin retains its abundant charm." Most of the mints focused on producing eight reales for export and neglected this useful and popular denomination. As a result, few dates are available in high grade.

Recorded mintage: 1,545,000.

Specification: 6.76 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-370.6.
