This specimen was lot 73355 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1848/7-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details. A RARE overdate issue, this piece exhibits a full strike with great clarity throughout. Some traces of a past cleaning but nicely toned over to a moderate love gray." The Guadalajara mint struck four reales sporadically 1843-50, 1855-63 and many dates are scarce to rare. The SCWC reports that no "normal dates" are known for 1848. A similar situation applies to the half real, eight reales and half escudo. Assayer JG operated 1836-63.
