Mexico 1848-Mo GC escudo

Stack's Bowers 2026 ANA sale, lot 40308

This specimen was lot 40308 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $9,760. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Escudo, 1848-Mo GC. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-61. Rare date and rare two year assayer. Finest of only two examples graded by NGC. Missing from some important collections. Cataloger can find no recent offerings of this date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection." The Mexico City mint struck this denomination 1825-27, 1830-34, 1841-50, 1856-63 and 1869. Assayer GC (not to be confused with mintmark GC) is listed for 1848-53. Mexico City is considered a common mint but some dates, like this one, are rare. The SCWC gives it a value equal to its gold content.
