Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72291

This specimen was lot 72291 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $463.60. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1849/8-Do CM. Durango Mint. NGC AU-55. Finest of only two examples graded by NGC. Rare condition for date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Durango mint struck one reales 1832-37 and 1841-64 and a number of dates are rare. Unlike the half reales, which appear occasionally in gem condition, this denomination nearly always comes heavily circulated. Assayer CM stamped this denomination 1849 only. The French eagle, distinctive to this mint, is featured on the reverse. No regular date is listed in the SCWC for 1849.
