Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73088

This specimen was lot 73088 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $793. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1849-Go PF. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-63. Tied with one other for highest graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. Two reales were struck at Guanajuato 1825-63 and 1867-68 with assayer PF recorded for 1848-68. Guanajuato and Zacatecas were the two mints which made a serious effort to strike minor coinage in addition to eight reales for export. The SCWC notes an overdate, 1849/8-PF/M, but does not award it a premium.
