Ponterio sale 155, lot 6262

This specimen was lot 6262 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $517.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. 8 Reales, 1849-JMR. Die style of 1849-1850. Dots divide assayer's letters. '8R'. 2 small edge flaws, light toning. Very attractive ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The Durango mint struck eight reales 1824-95 and this date is very scarce to rare. The SCWC notes an 1849/39 overdate as well as mintmaster CM.
