Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72065

The first specimen was lot 3774 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO: Republic, AR ½ real, 1849/8-C, assayer CE, a bit of a soft strike, but nicely toned, EF to About Unc." The second specimen was lot 72065 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $149. The catalog description^[2] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1849/8-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. Lustrous and attractive. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." This is a slightly better date of a slightly better mint. No regular dates are believed to exist for 1849. The Culiacan mint struck half reales 1846-49, 1852-63 and 1867-69.
