SB122-7794r.jpg

This specimen was lot 7794 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1849-Mo GC. Mexico City Mint. PCGS AU-55. A pleasing coin with sharp strike detail throughout, some flashy luster remaining in the fields, and mottled gray toning." The Mexico City mint, founded in the days of Hernan Cortez, never stopped minting coins during all the chaos of the war of independence and the turmoil of the early republic. The Mexico City mint was one of three to strike the cap-and-ray eight reales with the "hook-neck" eagle and also emitted large quantities of eight reales with the facing eagle shown here. This date is fairly common and is accompanied by an 1849/8 overdate.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.10; DP-Mo34.
