Mexico 1849-C CE 8 reales

Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70355

This specimen was lot 70355 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1849-C CE. Culiacan Mint. NGC MS-61. Bright and lustrous, this charming example exhibits a bold strike with much remaining luster. A thin layer of mottled tone with hints of brilliance amongst the devices adds to it pleasing appearance. A handsome example of this SCARCE early date from this mint." The Culiacan mint was opened in 1846 and struck all the silver and gold denominations. The early issues are scarce but become more common after 1855. The 1849 is scarce but not rare. Assayer CE is listed for 1846-70. The mint was closed in 1905 and was the last branch mint along with Zacatecas.
