Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72256

This specimen was lot 72256 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $69. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1849-Z OM. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU Details--Reverse Scratched. Only example graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Zacatecas mint struck this denomination 1826-63 and 1869. Most dates are common as Zacatecas and Guanajuato were the two mints which seriously attempted to produce minor coinage as well as the eight reales minted for export. The larger denominations of this mint show the "Z^S" mintmark but this one uses a simple "Z". Assayer OM (Manuel Ochoa and Manuel Miner) is listed for 1831-56.
