Mexico 1849-Do CM 8 reales
The first specimen was lot 70423 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1849-Do CM. Durango Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Variety with hidden "Y" on both obverse and reverse, "B" & "G" on reverse ribbon. This wholesome example boasts a strong strike with well-formed bold devices and even wear. The surfaces display a light gray coloration with minor earthen deposits in the peripheries and amongst the devices. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. Despite its shortcomings a presentable example of this very SCARCE date/assayer combination." The Durango mint was opened in 1812 to strike portrait eight reales during the War of Independence. It was one of three mints to strike "hookneck eagle" eight reales in 1824. The standard eagle was adopted in 1825. Durango struck all the gold and silver denominations except the four reales and the four escudos. For this year, the SCWC reports 1849/39-CM, 1849-CM, 1849-JMR (oval 0's and round 0's), 1849-JMR/CM. All are at least scarce and some are rare. Assayer RM is listed for 1830-48. Dies at Durango were made using distinctive hubs using an elegant eagle (often called the "French eagle") but left in service far longer than at other mints, creating a multitude of varieties, including many overdates. The Durango mint closed in 1895, along with Guadalajara, Chihuahua, Alamos and Hermosillo.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
