This specimen was lot 72416 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $268.40. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1849-Pi SP. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC VF-20. Rare one year assayer. This was probably a transposition of the order of the assayer's initials, "PS". Only example graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. One reales were struck at San Luis Potosí in 1831 and 1837-62. Assayer SP is, as the auctioneers state, likely an engraving error for PS, who stamped one reales 1842-43, 1849 and 1857-61. Unlike the half reales, which appear occasionally in gem condition, this denomination nearly always comes heavily circulated.
