Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72083

This specimen was lot 72083 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $793. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1849-Do JMR. Durango Mint. NGC EF-45. Very rare date. Tied for finest of only two graded by NGC. Superscript "o" of mint mark is double punched and on top of the "1" in date. Reverse die is significantly rotated. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Durango mint struck half reales 1832-34, 1837, 1841-64 and 1869 and quite a few dates are rare. Assayer JMR (José Maria Ramirez) is listed for 1849-52 and all of his half reales are at least scarce.
