This specimen was lot 71274 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1861/0-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A rather bold overdate variety featuring a clear '0' under the final digit of the date, this lustrous and lightly toned example is difficult in Mint State grades, and stands with just one other piece for the finest of the type in the PCGS census." This eight reales is one of a series struck 1825-97 at the Zacatecas mint. Assayer VL is recorded for 1859-64; assayer MO is also recorded for 1855-60. The SCWC lists 1861-VL, 1861/0-VL and 1861/0-VL/MO for the year and prices them all as common.
