Mexico 1861-Do CP real

from Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72301

This specimen was lot 72301 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $610. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1861-Do CP. Durango Mint. NGC Fine Details--Reverse Scratched. Very scarce. Only example graded by NGC. Reverse scratches light but numerous. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Alamos, Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The Durango mint struck one reales 1832-37 and 1841-64 and a number of dates are rare. Assayer CP (Carlos de la Peña) is listed for 1853-73. The SCWC notes no varieties for the year. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a "bit", is common in low grade. There are no common dates in uncirculated.
