Heritage sale 3010, lot 21583

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The first specimen was lot 21583 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,725. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1861O-FR, AU50 NGC, strong details, especially for this mint and era, the surfaces of the dies had been polished leaving raised 'die lines' in the fields. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." The Oaxaca mint struck eight escudos 1858-69; most of the dates are available in well circulated condition but nice specimens are scarce, especially as the Oaxaca mint is notorious for poor strike.
