This specimen was lot 73152 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,586. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1861-Pi PS. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU-58. Scarce date. Finest of only two examples graded by NGC. Rare condition for this date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The San Luis Potosi mint struck two reales 1829-30, 1837, 1841-46, 1849-50, 1856-63 and 1868-69, with a number of rare dates. Assayer PS (Pompaso Sanabria), who shared 1861 with assayer RO, is recorded for most of those years. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard. The 1861-RO is slightly scarcer than the 1861-PS.
