Mexico 1861-Pi PS 8 reales

from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72209

This specimen was lot 72209 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $95. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1861-Pi PS. San Luis Potosí Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Gold Shield. A solid overall offering, presenting some striking weakness, minor handling, and light cleaning." The specimen shown is an 1861Pi-PS eight reales from the San Luis Potosí mint, which struck the type 1827-93. This date is fairly scarce, with the other assayer, PO, being rather more available. The San Luis Potosí mint closed in 1893, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold.
