This specimen was lot 1903 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO, Michoacán, Tanteo del Pilon, copper 1/8 real token, 1861. XF with interesting doubled striking resulting in a "18661" date on one side and double mountain and sun on the other, chocolate brown-toned surfaces, a few contact marks on the date side." This token was issues for the municipality of Tancítaro, now in the center of the avocado growing region in Michoacán. Municipal tokens were issued in great profusion in nineteenth century Mexico, where they were used to cheat the poor. They are poorly made and even more poorly documented.
