Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 73082

This specimen was lot 73082 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $552. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Michoacan. Uruapan. 1/8 Real, 1859. PCGS VF-35. Only graded example in PCGS." The full name of the town is Uruapan del Progreso. The population as of 2020 was about 299,000 and it is the center of the avocado growing region in Michoacan. While the central government of Mexico reserved for itself the right to strike gold and silver, the states were permitted to strike the base metal coinage, a right which they exploited to the utmost. Both state and federal officials discouraged local and municipal issues but they exist in great profusion. They are poorly made and even more poorly documented.
