This specimen was lot 73285 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $2,928. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1859-Pi MC. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC AU Details--Obverse Damage. Very rare date. Second highest graded by NGC. Very rare condition for this date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. The San Luis Potosi mint struck four reales 1837-38, 1842-64, 1868-69 and many dates, including this one, are rare. Assayer PS (Pompaso Sanabria) is recorded for most of those years. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a half dollar, is common up thru Very Fine.
