This specimen was lot 1355 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $253. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. ½ Escudo, 1859 Ga JG. Guadalajara. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. A boldly struck coin with a light yellow-gold flan. The surfaces show just a hint of wear but the planchet is slightly warped. A rare date. About Uncirculated." Guadalajara struck half escudos intermittently between 1825-61 with many dates being very rare, as this one.
