SB923-73346r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73346 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1859-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU-50. An exciting and seemingly undergraded coin from this seldom encountered date, mint, and assayer combination, plentiful mint luster radiates from the fields, all punctuated by areas of vivid brilliance near the legends. Some very gentle handling stretches across the centers, but it is quite minor and difficult to detect, not at all hindering enjoyment of the rather nicely struck devices." Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato mint as the largest issuer of eight reales. Assayer MO operated 1855-60, 1863-65 and VL 1859-64.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, 0.785 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.13, DP-Zs41.
