Mexico 1859-Ga JG 8 reales

from the Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 7775

This specimen was lot 7775 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1859-Ga JG. Guadalajara Mint. NGC MS-64. A coin dripping with frosty luster, and largely free of toning. A weak strike on the centers have left striations on the devices, from a rough original planchet surface." The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the war of independence and was kept open by the republic. Cap and ray eight reales were struck there 1825-95. This date is not common no rare and is accompanied by 1859/8 and 1859/7 overdates.
