Mexico 1859-Ca JC/RG 8 escudos

This specimen was lot 39431 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $1,468.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1859-CaJC/RG. NGC EF-45. Clear evidence of repunched assayer initials. A boldly struck example with full claims to the assigned grade, sharp rims and great luminous color. A fully original and problem-free example, a condition scarcity as such, made even more so by the unusual assayer repunch. Pedigree: From the Thomas P. Warfield Collection." Many consider the Chihuahua mintmark to be common on pre-decimal issues but that is only true of the eight reales of the period 1874-95. Chihuahua half reals are known only for the years 1844-45 and the one reals 1844-45 and 1855. No four reales are known to exist from this mint. The only gold issues are eight escudos 1841-71.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
