This specimen was lot 73103 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $3,660. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1861-Ho FM. Hermosillo Mint. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. Sonora Cap and Eagle. Very rare date. Second finest of only two graded by NGC. An attractive example featuring the Sonora Cap and Eagle. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. According to the SCWC, Hermosillo only struck two reales 1861-62 and 1867. Assayer FM (Florencio Monteverde) is recorded for 1871-76 but is also known on eight reales of 1861-65. All of the Hermosillo minors (half, one, two and four reales) are scarce to very rare. The Sonoran eagle shown here was used only at Hermosillo and Culiacan. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-MoCH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.
