This specimen was lot 72426 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $341.60. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1861-Pi RO. San Luis Potosi Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. Scarce date. Only example graded by NGC. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Alamos, Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. The San Luis Potosi mint struck one reales 1831 and 1837-62 and quite a few dates are rare. Assayer RO (Romualdo Obregon), who shared 1861 with assayer PS, is recorded for 1859-65. The SCWC notes no overdates for the year. This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a "bit", is common in low grade. There are no common dates in uncirculated.
