SB1123-70904r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70904 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1860-Zs MO. Zacatecas Mint. NGC AU-53. A wholesome example of the date with light attractive mottled patina and even wear. Ex: Norweb Collection." The Zacatecas mint is tied with Guanajuato as the most prolific mint during the Republic and most of the eight reales struck 1825-97 are common, as is this one. Production in 1860 was shared between assayer MO (1855-60 and 1863-65) and VL (1859-64). Overdates 1860/50 and 1860/59 are reported along with an overassayer, VL/MO.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.13; DP-Zs42.
