Mexico 1860-Zs VL 4 reales

Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 23379

This specimen was lot 23379 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $504. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1860-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. A well struck coin, with abundant field luster and lovely silver-gray toning throughout." Shown is an 1860Z^S-VL 4 reales, one of a type struck at the Zacatecas mint 1830-70. Assayer VL is recorded for 1859-64. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This date is slightly scarce. Assayer MO is also reported for 1860. This example is valuable because four reales are virtually unknown in this grade.

Recorded mintage: unknown but slightly scarce.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.903 fine silver, .392 troy oz ASW.
