Mexico 1860-Zs MO 8 escudos

Heritage sale 3076, lot 34346

This specimen was lot 34346 in Heritage sale 3076 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Mexico: Republic gold 8 Escudos 1860 Zs-MO AU Details (Obverse Graffiti) NGC, Zacatecas mint. The first example of this assayer-mintmark combination we have offered, possessing a delightful luster in the outer regions." The Zacatecas mint struck this type 1858-71. The SCWC notes this date as common altho the 1860/59-VL/MO is rare and the 1860/9 overdate is slightly better. Zacatecas was a prolific issuer of all denominations of silver but the gold coins are not so common.
