Mexico 1860-Mo TH 2 reales

from Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 73131

This specimen was lot 73131 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $129. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1860-Mo TH. Mexico City Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca did not strike this type. The Mexico City mint struck two reales 1825-37, 1840-41, 1847-63 and 1867-69, with most dates being common. Production in 1860 was shared between assayer FH (1858-60) and assayer TH (1860-61). This type, legal tender in the pre Civil War United States for a quarter, is common except in uncirculated. The 1861-Mo CH is the only date of two reales that is reasonably common in high grade, the result of the dispersal of a hoard.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-374.10.
