Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 57249

This specimen was lot 57249 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1842-Zs OM. Zacatecas Mint. NGC FINE-12." Assayer OM is recorded for 1830-55 at the Zacatecas mint, which struck this denomination 1830-70. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This particular date is listed as common but is seldom seen. Large and small letters varieties exist for this date with the small letters obtaining a slight premium.
