Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 23372
SB820-23372r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23372 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1842-Go PJ. Guanajuato Mint. NGC MS-63. While we do not believe this to be an over date, the date seems to be re-punched and shares some of the same characteristics of the over date variety. A well struck example displaying mottled sunset hued patina throughout offering good eye appeal." Assayers PJ and PM seem to be priced about the same. The SCWC also reports 1842/31 and 1842/1 overdates.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-377.8; DP-Go24.
