This specimen was lot 72211 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 2 Reales, 1842-Pi JS. San Luis Potosí Mint. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. Some minor striking weakness is noted near the central areas on this SCARCE minor, but it nevertheless features an alluring peripheral tone and only a hint of light handling." Shown is an 1842Pi-JS two reales, one of a type struck at the Potosi mint 1829-30, 1837, 1842-50, 1857-63, 1868-69. Assayer JS is recorded for 1827-42 along with assayer PS for 1842. Thirteen mints (Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango, Estado de Mexico, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Zacatecas is tied with Guanajuato as the commonest mint. This date is not common.
