Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70309

This specimen was lot 70309 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1842-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC AU-55. Pleasing and original looking, this handsome example boasts a strong strike with well-formed design features. The surfaces exhibits even wear with plenty remaining luster in the protected areas. An attractive example of this SCARCE date from this mint." The Chihuahua mint began casting eight reales in 1810 in the opening part of the War of Independence. Machinery was obtained and portrait eight reales were produced 1814-22. The first cap and ray eight reales was issued in 1831. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1842. The 1842 is the first date that is not scarce. Most Chihuahua minors prior to the 1870's are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.
