Mexico 1843-Ca RG 8 reales
This specimen was lot 70310 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1843-Ca RG. Chihuahua Mint. NGC AU-58. This gently circulated example boasts a strong strike with lustrous surfaces displaying light attractive tone. Wholesome with a pleasing appearance, a handsome example of this tough to locate SCARCE date." The Chihuahua mint began casting eight reales in 1810 in the opening part of the War of Independence. Machinery was obtained and portrait eight reales were produced 1814-22. The first cap and ray eight reales was issued in 1831. The early issues are rare but become more common after 1842. The 1843 is somewhat scarce. Most Chihuahua minors prior to the 1870's are scarce to rare. The mint was closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Durango, Guadalajara and Hermosillo. Oaxaca and San Luis Potosi were closed in 1893.
