Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 72194

This specimen was lot 72194 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,220. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1843-Mo MM. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-65+. Highest graded of four examples by NGC. Frosty white, sharply struck. Exceptional for this date. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Reales Minors." Of the fourteen mints of the Republic of Mexico, only Oaxaca and Real de Catorce did not strike this type. This specimen was struck at Mexico City in 1843, one of a type struck there 1825-63. Assayer MM served 1842-43 and this date is fairly common. We suspect that the feathers on the eagle have been "helped" as they don't resemble the plumage of the eagle of 1842 or 1844.
