Sedwick sale 11, lot 1315

The specimen shown was lot 1315 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $155.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guadalajara, Mexico, cap-and-rays 4 reales, 1843MC. Decent VF with attractive toning, bold details, parts of rim crude (as made)." This is one of a type struck at the Guadalajara mint 1843-63. Assayer MC is recorded for 1839-45. Ten mints (Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, Potosi, Oaxaca, Hermosillo, Real del Catorce, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guadalajara and Culiacan) struck this type of which Guanajuato is tied with Zacatecas as the commonest mint. Guadalajara is not a common mint for four reales but this date turns up occasionally.
